Dress Appropriately: How many times have we heard that one?! Think about the position you’re interviewing for and how you think you would dress every day for work and polish it up a bit. For example, a “dressy dress” and heels for gals may be a bit much for a technician helper or detailer position. Same goes for guys who show up in a suit and tie who interview for the same position. Existing employer furnished uniforms or slouchy, dirty (anything!) jeans are generally not a good idea.
Interview Protocol: Refrain from smoking, gum chewing and hair twirling. Arrive a little early for the appointed time. Greet the interviewer with direct eye contact and a firm handshake (if offered). Sit in the appropriate seat when invited to sit down. Don’t just pick a chair. Sit up straight and don’t cross your arms. Make direct eye contact when speaking and be honest and straight forward in your responses.
Review your resume before you go. If you forgot about a little detail since it’s been a couple of years since you last looked at it, that’s the one the interviewer will ask questions on! Bring along any certificates or pertinent items of interest.
Answer questions with “yes” or “no” when appropriate “Yeah”, “Nope” and “Uh-Huh” or “Nuh-Uh” are not the best choice when responding. Don’t make the mistake of over-selling yourself. If you aren’t sure of what they’re requiring of you, ask for clarification and if you don’t have prior knowledge or experience of the subject at least let them know you’re willing to learn or be trained on the subject. Again, respond honestly and sincerely to questions and comments.
Avoid volunteering any negative comments regarding a former employer. Negativity never makes anyone look good. Do convey some positive comments regarding your experience in the working world, preferably in the field you’re interviewing for. For more helpful tips, see the Employers Tips section! These serve as a guideline for employers to find the right people. Is it you they’re looking for?
